Adventure Time!

This is no doubt old news (just checked and season 1 aired back in 2010!) to some of you, but I was recently introduced to my new favourite show a few weeks ago via the spurious delights of Saturday Morning kids TV.

Adventure Time!

There's a ton of stuff to like but it was the D&D references that first caught my eye - just check this episode out! Displacer cats, mimics and other Dungeon nasties.

The setting is a bizarre and post apocalyptic one - the magical kingdom of Oooo, which seems to be what the Earth(?) has become after the "Mushroom War".

Finn is a 12 year old Human who wants to become the best adventurer in the land and Jake, his faithful companion, is an awesome magical dog who can grow, shrink and party with the best of them - and he's voiced by John DiMaggio - also the voice of Bender in Futurama.

Adventure Time is now essential viewing for me and the boy, much to the wife's annoyance - not sure it appeals to her sensibilities!

The possibility of gaming Adventure Time had also occurred to me - how cool is this!

  1. I just discover this show as well, it's on every afternoon in the USA. Unfortunately, my oldest is still a bit young for the show so I can't watch it with him around (even if he does love it!).

    1. My lad is six so a lot of it goes over his head - afraid we're both hooked though!

    2. My wife has banned my boys from it, I think my youngest pretending to be scared of the vampire did it for her. That and zombie fart jokes. Anyway since she tries to ban just about every show these days one ban isn't so bad. At least we still get to watch Regular show, Teen Titans Go and Gumball.

    3. I always see that as the mark of a good show!

My wife isn't too keen - I think she just thinks it's too weird. She has the same look of incomprehension on her face as she does when I'm watching a bit of Reeves and Mortimer...

Mind you, what with the sort of drivel she watches, she doesn't have a leg to stand on should she choose to moan about me and the boy enjoying a bit of Adventure Time!

    4. She tried to ban starwars. I have two little boys and she tried to stop me showing them starwars. I'll leave it there....

I think alot of adventure time gets watched when I'm in the kitchen and can't see what their watching..honest.

    5. I actually was the one that banned it, but mostly because my 5 year old is constantly getting in trouble for saying things at school that he shouldn't. Last thing I need is him repeating some of the things said in that show.

    7. Erny - wow! I told my class off the other day for not knowing the plot for "A New Hope" - should be compulsory viewing in my opinion! Really good for teaching story structure in Literacy too.

Andrew - fair enough. There's nothing worse than getting messages from school or hauled in to see the teacher about that kind of thing. Must admit I always feel a tiny bit of trepidation going to my son's Parent's Evenings, just in case he has been caught saying something he shouldn't. Nothing so fay - Luckily he seems to understand how to moderate his speech in different settings!

    8. I love this show. No cable, so I've only been able to watch what's on DVD. As much as everyone is talking about young kids not watching it (my daughter is almost 4, and not allowed to watch it either) as an adult it is a wonderfully nostalgic feel-good show for me. It is written with an amazing blend of absurdity, positive outlook, and, of course, adventure.

    10. Oops, just been sat here enjoying a fair portion of season 3 with both son (6) and daughter (4).

Bad parenting or possibly I'm just very irresponsibly responsible?

For me that hugely positive outlook in every episode makes it all ok - that and I'm sure all my daughter is interested in is all the Princesses - even got her to admit that Adventure Time is better than Disney - result!

Interestingly they both wanted to rewatch the Fionna and Cake episode straight after it finished - not sure what that was about? I did get the big stupid grins we all had after the feel good factor of "What was Missing?" though.

    11. Not judging on parenting. All I know is that a lot of it would still go over my daughter's head right now. I think I would just prefer she watches it in a few years when she can appreciate it more.

Sorry about the double post, not sure why that happened.

    12. No worries - the irresponsibly responsible quote from the show (Wizard) popped into my head and I had to use it ; )

I reckon the DVD boxsets will make great pressies for the kids in a few years time and might keep Dad quiet for a few hours too...

There seems to have been a few double posts from various folk - maybe a blogger glitch?

    1. Hi Chris - Not watched it yet but it's popped up as a related video either on Netflix or Youtube - looks good.

Just watched "Every Ello Guv'nor in Regular Show" - Cracking!

  5. been curious about trying to get a roleplay game going set in the adventure time setting, I'd heard about it, but only caught it first hand at a friends house whilst looking after their kids one morning.
    epic beautiful madness

    1. That definitely sums it up.

I suppose an RPG set in Oooo would have the benefit of no one being able to take themselves too seriously as well as some crazy scenarios!

    2. heard of it, had a look and it seems alright.
currently in process of working on a sort of dungeon crawl orientated game where the players are pretty much muppets and are taking there adventurous urges out by entering a quarantined/abandoned themepark resort thats had an 'incident' and unknown to the greater world is now bset described as resident evil meets disneyland.
So far ran ome game, madness ensued and fun was had by all.

    3. Reminds me of a board game I saw advertised in an old White Dwarf - it involved farmers and rabbits I think and loads of cartoon style violence.

    4. We used to play toon in lunch breaks in the 5th form (that's year you do GCSEs in todays money) then we wondered why none of the girls used to hang around. Toon is probably beter for gumball to be honest.

  6. It's a great show. I actually discovered it sometime in 2006 or 2007 when the pilot aired on Nickelodeon, then was cancelled. You can find it on youtube...it's a bit of a trip (like the rest of the show, I guess). Finn is named Penn (after creator Pendleton Ward, at a guess) Jake isn't voiced by DiMaggio, Lady Rainicorn speaks in strange gurgles rather than Japanese...oh yeah, and Penn meets Abraham Lincoln when he travels back in time to Mars.

  7. You should also check out 'Over The Garden Wall' if you can. But on Adventure Time roleplaying, Far Away Land is (apparently) just that with the serial numbers filed off:

    1. Cheers for the recommendation Andy - the first episode was great. The Beast definitely reminded me of the Nothing from Never Ending Story. Might have to make this one regular viewing too...

Far Away Land looks like good fun too.

    2. Unfortunately, Over The Garden Wall is only a ten episode mini series. Or perhaps fortunately, as it is a self-contained story. I really enjoyed episode two - it is the sort of thing I'm going to have to inflict on my RPG players at some point...

    3. Small and perfectly formed then - shouldn't distract me from the painting table for too long at least!

  8. I'm a big fan of Adventure Time. My boys love it, but I'd happily watch it on my own. I've recently introduced them to Samurai Jack and the old Knightmare series from the 80s.

  11. I think we'd saw the portray about Anti-Terrorist on the news.
that'll make all the Adventure Time Villains to be turn into the formidable, but vicious groups that'll stop every terrorists and Finn the Human at the same time.
    We'll called them...The Anti-Mutants-And-Finn-The-Human group.
