So Phreedh, old buddy, old pal - I think we're even now. I was worried that my struggle with bendy plastic, heavy eyelids (fell asleep at the painting desk at least once this week but managed to keep my face out of the paint pallete somehow!) and my inadequacies in sculpting hands and feet would get the better of me, but somehow, Interwebz glory is mine!
Right enough of the triumphant crowing - not really cricket, I know!
As you can see I've gone for the colour scheme straight out of the 3rd ed. rule book and actually I think the orange works a lot better in the flesh that I thought it would.
Here's the closest I could get with the minis and scenery in my collection to that image we all know and love.
and finally, a Goblin's eye view.
Perhaps once I have a few more of the minis featured in the original picture - Prince Ulther's Dwarfs and the Wood Elf chariot for example - I might have a go at replaying the battle.
Now to hunt down the other two FF ogres...
Well done for re-creating this classic scene. Its a joy to see the giant so lovingly restored to its right place- in front of a fleeing group of goblins. I am envious of this one... I'll have to get searching on eBay for a giant of my own!
ReplyDeleteWell played sir! he looks like he just stopped off the pages of my youth. I love the goblin eye view shot...makes him look quite terrifying.
ReplyDeleteMan I wish I were competitive, I'd get more painted. Looks great and a real centre piece to a collection. A must have, but I would say that.
ReplyDeleteDon't stand for it Phreedh! Excellent work and virtually indistinguishable from the model that graces third edition's pages.
ReplyDeleteI admire what you've got accomplished here.

Oh, Yeah!!! Tremendous, Thantsants!! A really wonderful job of bringing this giant to life.
ReplyDeleteHa ha, the smack talk is worse post-competition than before. =D Oh well, I just have to suck it up and keep on trucking. My giant is coming along, but not feeling the magic with him. It's a rather rough "mini" to paint. =D
ReplyDeleteThat's 1-1 Steve. Next one will be decisive... ;)
Yeah sorry mate - I guess victory went to my head!
ReplyDeleteKnow what you mean by rough though.
What's the next contest going to be - your Reaper Bones pile versus my lead pile? ;)
Thanks everyone else - glad he's recognisable. His appearance in the 3rd ed. rule book is one of his redeeming features as a mini!
All I keep thinking is...."Run away, Run away!". Very nicely done.
ReplyDeleteBravely run away, away...
DeleteCheers!
HA! Wow! Nostalgia!!! I pored over those photos for years, trying to absorb every detail of the figures and terrain... I had never seen the giant in any catalog and after a time I assumed he was someone's home-made figure, largely because the position of the left arm appears so awkward in the Warhammer rule book. Although your paint job is uncannily evocative of the original, it's also far better, because I can now clearly see the structure of the arm. Although its all mutated and twisted, I can see the sculptor's reasoning now. Anyway, really wonderful job. Great work!!!
ReplyDeleteVery kind of you to say and yup - he's doing a bit of knuckle dragging in a rather awkward manner. I think I made his thumb look a bit odder in my efforts to sculpt a bit more detail though!
DeleteGood lord. I'm getting a huge reading on the awesomeometer. It's off the scale!
ReplyDeleteThank ye kindly Mr S, but I can't seem to find that particular gadget in the blogger layout options... ;)
