The ship building rolls ever onwards and my ship nears completion. I'll have a full naming ceremony and backstory when she's ready to launch!
I must admit the aft section has had me scratching my head a bit as there's been loads of funny angles involved. The original poop deck gets narrower towards the back of the ship and there is a slight camber on the deck too, which made cutting the base of the walls for the "extension" very interesting!
Adding to that was the problem of adding sloped roofs to walls that ran on a diagonal. Solution - make it square!
The new poop deck is wider and probably higher than the model in the film but I wasn't too worried about that. I think I've got the proportions of the ship roughly the same as the film version and a wider poop means I can fit more minis on it!
Another complication was the fact that I wanted to make each floor accessible for gaming. The top floor was easy enough as the poop deck just forms a simple lid -
The middle deck was a little complicated - as you can see the bottom deck's walls make a nice trapezium shape. In the end I made a lid that fit this shape and then boxed it out so that it was square to enable me to fit the sloping roves more easily.
I quite liked the fact that the original poop deck lifts off to allow access to the Captain's cabin below so I kept it. Down there is a bench and table which looks roughly right in terms of scale. The bed, which you can see tucked into the left hand corner is massive though! I haven't quite decided what to do yet but I'd rather avoid cutting it out. One option I'm toying with is planking it over to look like a massive treasure chest! The other cabins will get furnished too - I've ordered some bits from Ainsty and have various tables and chairs that can be added.
So ever onwards we must plow - next job is adding the detail. I've ordered some nice doors and windows from Antenociti's Workshop. I'll also be adding some supports running from the hull to the aft cabins, which will be cunningly affixed to allow me to remove floors as needed.
After that I'd better think about beefing my Giant up as he looks a little slim compared to the chap in Time Bandits.
Then there's the sails, rigging, assorted ropework, buoys and other detritus I need to litter the decks with...
Can't wait to play this game - have you seen some of the other ships under construction or even finished already?
Ollie's Ghost ship, Fimm's Dreadnought and Nurgle Hulk and Erny's Elf Cog. Apologies if I've missed any others in blogland! Definitely worth checking out Harry's amazing creations on the Warhammer Ahoy thread at the Oldhammer forum though.
This game and the production it gives birth too is absolutely brilliant. That and Captain Crooks' Deathrace game will be 2 beacons of creativity !
ReplyDeleteAlthough I'd agree the giant could use some more cheeks, the whole build is absolutely excellent so far ;)
Thanks Mr A - It certainly seems to have captured our imaginations - can't wait to see the Deathracers in the flesh/plastic/chrome!
DeleteThanks mate - can't wait to get the detail stuck on. It still seems a bit of a blank canvas to me at the moment.
ReplyDeleteYep currently the head lets the rest down, looking forwartd to seeing how you plan to sort it out.
ReplyDeleteYep - still definitely a shop model head. Hopefully I'll have enough polyfilla and miliput to give him some rolls of fat on the back of his neck, chubby cheeks, jowly jowls and a beetling brow - not forgetting his stretchy ears!
DeleteIt'll make a nice change from cutting strips of cardboard for the roof tiles...
It gets better and better-the game will look amazing!
ReplyDeleteAlan
Thanks again Alan - the game should certainly be a right spectacle!
DeleteIf it looks this good already, I can't wait to see the finished product!
ReplyDelete*curses that I can't make BOYL this year*
I just hope I do it justice with the paint job - never really painted anything this big!
DeleteWe'll be thinking of you mate - in between dice rolls ; )
Beautiful modellin! That game is going to be monumental. I wish I could be there. I think it's well worth the effort to have the interior accessible... oh, the boarding actions...
ReplyDeleteCheers Matthew - I just hope there's still folk with the energy to play on the Sunday...
DeleteMy Ainsty order shipped today so I should be able to start interior decorating soon!
